Local web agency alternative

Looking for a local web agency alternative?

If you've asked around for a website and someone's quoted you £1,500 to £3,500 to design and build one bespoke, this page is for you. The £297 done-for-you alternative we offer catches a lot of people by surprise. I've tried to be honest about when a local agency is genuinely the better call.

The short answer

Choose a local web design agency if you want a fully custom site built from scratch, you have a clear vision of how you want it to look, you have £2,000+ to invest in the build, and you can wait 6 to 12 weeks for it to be ready.

Choose Inboundry if you want a properly built site live in seven days (often much sooner) for £297, designed specifically for UK tradespeople, with the option to add ongoing marketing on top. We know your industry.

If you're not sure, keep reading. We've tried to be fair about the trade-offs.

Who a local web design agency is built for

Local web design agencies are everywhere in the UK. Plymouth, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, London, every town has a handful. They range from one-person freelancers working out of a spare bedroom up to 20-person operations with proper offices. They typically charge £1,000 to £3,000 for a small business website build, often with optional ongoing care plans on top at £50 to £200/month.

The traditional process: you have a discovery call, they quote, you pay a deposit, they design, you review, they build, you review again, they launch. Total time from "yes" to "live" is usually 6 to 12 weeks, and it often stretches longer because either you get busy with jobs and don't get back to them on the design review, or they get busy with a different client and you slip down the priority list.

For the right kind of business, this is genuinely the better way to do things. A bespoke build can look exactly the way you want it to. A good agency will sit with you, understand your business properly, write copy that reflects how you actually talk, and design pages that fit your specific services rather than a generic template.

What local web agencies do well

  • Genuinely bespoke design. Every page custom. Every layout considered. If you have specific tastes or a strong brand vision, an agency can execute it in ways a productised service can't.
  • In-person relationships. You can meet them. Sit in their office. Look them in the eye when you brief them. For some business owners, that matters.
  • Custom content and copy. A good agency will interview you and write copy that sounds like you, not a template adapted with your business name.
  • Specialist knowledge. Some local agencies specialise in trades and bring real depth, they know what works for plumbers, electricians, builders, and they'll push back on bad ideas.
  • Bigger feature scope. Need a custom booking system? Membership area? Trade-portal login? Integration with a specific bit of UK trade software? A bespoke build can do all of it.
  • Local support. When something breaks, you can phone someone who knows you. Some agencies will even pop in.
  • Ongoing care plans. Most offer optional retainers covering hosting, updates, small changes, and SEO. £50 to £200/month is typical.

What hiring a local web agency might not be right for

Every option has trade-offs, and these are the ones worth knowing about before you commit.

  • The price range is wide and often opaque. Quotes for "a tradesman website" can land anywhere from £800 to £5,000+. Without knowing the market it's hard to tell whether you're being quoted fairly. Some agencies are excellent value, others are charging twice what their work is worth.
  • Timescales are long. Six to twelve weeks is normal. Some agencies stretch to 16. If you need a website live this month, traditional agency timelines are the bottleneck.
  • You're paying for the discovery process as much as the build. A decent chunk of any agency build is the discovery calls, mood boards, design rounds, and review meetings. That work has real value, but it isn't the website. It's the journey to the website.
  • Custom builds aren't always better than productised builds. Many tradespeople end up with a beautifully designed site that performs no better than a templated one, because the underlying SEO and content fundamentals are the same regardless of how pretty the design is.
  • Aftercare varies wildly. Some agencies are brilliant about post-launch support. Others vanish the moment the final invoice is paid. It's worth asking specifically: who answers the phone in month 13?
  • Some specialise in design, not marketing. A beautiful website that doesn't rank on Google and doesn't have a review-generation system is a brochure. Plenty of agencies build brochures and call them websites.
  • Cancelling a retainer can be awkward. Some agencies hold the website hostage on their hosting and CMS. Worth checking the offboarding terms before you sign anything.

Why we built Inboundry

A fair question, given that local agencies have been doing this work for decades. Two reasons.

Most tradespeople were stuck between two bad options. Either they got quoted £2,000 to £3,000 for a custom build with a 10-week timeline and a tradesperson's-bank-balance-shaped deposit, or they were told to use Wix and figure it out themselves. Neither answer fits the trade who just wants a properly built site live this month for a price that doesn't need a business case.

The same trade-specific decisions get made on every site. Heating engineers all need the same kind of service pages. Electricians all need the same compliance details (NICEIC, Part P, EICR). Builders all need a portfolio gallery and an enquiries form. Once you've built the right kind of site for one Gas Safe engineer, the next Gas Safe engineer doesn't need a custom design process to get the same result. You need the right template, applied properly, with their business at the centre of it.

That's the gap we built Inboundry to fill. Not to replace local agencies, but to give tradespeople a third option that didn't really exist before: properly built, trade-specific, productised, fast, fairly priced.

Who Inboundry is built for

Inboundry is a done-for-you website service for UK tradespeople running small businesses. If the prospect of a local agency feels like a lot of money and a lot of meetings for something you're not sure your business needs at that scale, we exist for you. Instead of starting from scratch with a discovery process and a 6 to 12 week build, we've built a system that gets a properly designed, trade-specific site live in seven days.

Here's the part that surprises most people: we don't charge you up front. We build the site for your business first, before we ever speak to you. You get to have a proper look at it, decide whether you like it, and only then do you commit and pay. No deposit, no contract, no sitting through a sales pitch before you've seen anything. And if there are bits you'd like changed once you've seen it, we make those changes. The site needs to be right for you, not just built and handed over.

What Inboundry does well

  • Seven days from yes to live. Not six weeks. Not three months. Seven days, often quicker.
  • £297 to get a website live. No discovery fee, no design rounds billed separately, no 50% deposit. £297 once and that's the website cost done.
  • Built specifically for UK trades. Every site is designed for UK tradespeople. The pages, the language, the service descriptions, the FAQs, and the compliance details (Gas Safe, NICEIC, OFTEC, PLI) are all written for the work you actually do.
  • Proper local SEO from day one. City and town landing pages, schema markup, Google Business Profile management, citations, the lot. Designed to rank for "your trade + your area" searches from the start, not bolted on afterwards.
  • It's all yours, even though we look after it. We host your site and look after your domain on your behalf so you don't have to think about any of the technical stuff. The moment you ever want to leave us, for any reason, we transfer the domain to you, hand over the content, and we'll make moving wherever you'd like to go as easy as possible. No strings attached, no exit fees, no awkward goodbyes.
  • Optional ongoing marketing. Growth at £79/month or Always On at £149/month covers SEO management, blog content, reviews automation, Google Business Profile management, and more. Growth is everything in Launchpad, plus monthly marketing to bring in more work. Always On is everything in Growth, plus an AI receptionist that answers every call. Cancel any time on 30 days' notice.
  • What you see is what you pay. £297 is £297. No surprise costs, no add-ons that double the bill.

Where Inboundry might not be the right fit

This section matters. If any of these describe you, Inboundry might not be your best move, and I'd rather you know that now.

  • If you have a strong, specific design vision and the budget to commission it properly, a bespoke agency build is the better call. We're productised. Our sites are well-designed but they're not a blank canvas, they follow a template that we know works for trades. If you want something genuinely unique, that's a different product.
  • If you need a custom feature that goes beyond a normal trade website, a booking portal, a member's area, a complex integration with your job management software, a custom calculator for quotes, a bespoke agency can build that. We can't, not within our productised scope.
  • If you value the in-person relationship with someone you can meet for a coffee, watch present a mood board, and shake hands with on signing, a local agency delivers that. We're remote. The work is excellent and the support is responsive, but it's all done by email, phone, and video call.
  • If your budget is over £2,000 and you want to spend it well, an agency with proper trade specialism can genuinely produce a more bespoke result than us. We're built to be brilliant at £297. If you've got £2,500 to invest, that money buys you a different experience.

Year 1 cost compared

The honest version of this comparison comes down to what you're really buying. A local agency build at £2,500 isn't more expensive than our £297 build because the work is different, it's more expensive because the process is different. Both deliver a website. One delivers it in 7 days with a productised approach. The other delivers it in 8 weeks with a custom approach.

The fairer comparison isn't "which is cheaper", it's "what do you actually need." Some trades genuinely need a bespoke build. Most don't. Most need a well-built site that converts visitors into phone calls, and that's what productisation does well at £297.

Year 1 cost breakdown for every scenario (click to expand)
Scenario Year 1 cost
Inboundry Launchpad only £297
Inboundry Growth (website + active marketing) £1,245
Inboundry Always On (website + marketing + AI receptionist) £2,085
Cheap UK web agency (~£1,200 build, no care plan) £1,200
Typical UK web agency (~£2,000 build + ~£75/month care plan) £2,900
Higher-end UK web agency (~£3,500 build + ~£150/month care plan + £400/month SEO retainer) £10,100

Real-world scenarios

These are the three patterns I see most often when I talk to tradespeople.

Scenario 1: Mike, a Gas Safe engineer working solo, three years in, busy with word-of-mouth work, no website at all.

Inboundry Launchpad is the better fit. Mike doesn't need a £2,500 bespoke website. He needs a properly built website live this month so customers Googling him after seeing his van find something professional. £297 buys him exactly that. He can add Growth at £79/month later if he wants ongoing marketing.

Scenario 2: Sarah, runs a small electrical firm with three engineers, established for eight years, strong local brand, wants a website that reflects how good her business is.

Local agency is probably the better fit. Sarah has the budget, the established brand, and the right kind of business to justify a £2,500 to £3,500 bespoke build. She wants something that feels custom to her business, not productised. A good local agency with proper trade specialism would do excellent work for her. She might also use us for the Always On marketing layer on top, but the build itself is a different product to what we offer.

Scenario 3: Dave, builder with a four-person crew, growing fast, wants both a website and active marketing.

Inboundry Growth or Always On is the better fit. Dave's bottleneck isn't the design of the website, it's the consistent flow of new enquiries. A £3,000 bespoke build and £200/month for an SEO retainer from a local agency would solve the problem but cost £5,400 in year one. Our Always On tier delivers the marketing layer alongside the website for £2,085. The agency option is fine, just more expensive for the outcome he actually wants.

Frequently asked questions

Is a £2,500 website actually better than a £297 website?

Honest answer: sometimes yes, often not. A £2,500 budget pays for more design time, more discovery, more bespoke copy, and more revisions. Whether that produces a better website depends on whether you actually needed those things. For a trade business that just wants a properly built site that converts visitors into calls, the underlying SEO and content fundamentals matter more than the design budget. Some agencies absolutely justify their prices. Others don't. The variation is enormous.

Why is your build so much cheaper than agency builds?

Three reasons. First, we've productised. We've built a proven trade-specific template that we apply at scale, rather than designing from scratch every time. Second, we've automated the parts of the process that don't need to be bespoke. Third, we know that most tradespeople don't actually want a custom site, they want a site that brings in work. Productisation lets us focus on what matters and skip what doesn't.

Can I get a custom design with Inboundry?

Within reason, yes. We pick from several design directions, we choose colours and fonts that fit your brand, and we customise the imagery, the copy, and the page structure. What we don't do is start from a blank canvas. If you want a completely bespoke design system built from scratch, that's a different product and a local agency is the right answer.

What about the local agency I've been talking to who specialises in trades?

Trade-specialist agencies are often the closest competitors to us, and the honest answer is that you should compare carefully. Ask them: how long from yes to live? What's the all-in cost in year one? What happens if you stop paying? Who answers the phone in month 13? If they answer well, they might be the right choice. If they hedge, that tells you something too. We're happy to be compared directly, we just want you to compare like-for-like.

Will Inboundry get me on the first page of Google?

Honestly: maybe, eventually, depending on your area and trade. SEO is a long game. We do everything right (technical setup, content, local citations, ongoing optimisation), but no one can guarantee a Google ranking, and any agency that says otherwise is lying. What we can guarantee is that your website is set up correctly, that we're publishing two blog posts a month on Growth, that we're managing your Google Business Profile, and that we're tracking the results so you can see what's working. Most clients see meaningful local ranking improvements within four to six months.

What happens if the local agency goes out of business?

This is a real risk. Small agencies do close, get acquired, or pivot to different markets. When that happens, you can be left with a website hosted somewhere you can't access, on a CMS you don't know how to use, with no support. We can't promise we'll be here forever either, but our ownership model means you can take everything with you whenever you want. The risk is lower, not zero. If this has already happened to you, we'll help you recover your domain and rebuild, free.

I'm already with a local agency. Can I switch?

Yes, and we make it easy. We handle the domain transfer, the content migration, and the Google Business Profile move. You forward one cancellation email to your current provider and that's it. Most switchers are live with us inside a week. See the full process on how to leave your current website company.

How long does Inboundry take to set up compared to a local agency?

We get a website live within seven days of you saying yes. Local agencies typically run 6 to 12 weeks from signed contract to live site. We're significantly faster on day one. We like to think we're better for year one than they are by year two, because we keep working on the marketing layer for trades who add Growth or Always On, rather than disappearing after launch.

Our honest take

Local web design agencies are a legitimate option. Some are excellent. Some specialise in trades and do work I genuinely respect. If you have a budget over £2,000, a clear vision, and the patience to go through a proper design process, you can end up with a website that reflects your business beautifully.

But there are also lots of trades who don't need that. They need a properly built website live this month for a price that doesn't require a business case, designed by people who already know what works for plumbers, electricians, and builders in the UK. That's the gap we built Inboundry to fill.

The difference isn't quality. Both can produce a great website. The difference is the process. An agency runs a custom discovery and design process for every client. We've productised the parts that don't need to be bespoke, kept the parts that do, and charged accordingly. For most tradespeople, that trade-off makes sense. For some, it doesn't, and a local agency really is the better call.

If our approach fits where you are, we'd love to show you the demo we've already built for your business. If a local agency feels like the right fit for you, we mean it: go and find a good one. Better to know now than to waste anyone's time.
