AI phone service alternative

Looking for an AI phone service alternative?

A whole new category of AI phone answering services has popped up specifically for UK tradespeople, charging £50 to £200 a month to answer your phone when you can't. Obviously I'm biased here. Our Always On tier includes the same kind of AI receptionist as part of a full package. But where a standalone AI phone service is genuinely the better fit for you, I'll tell you straight.

The short answer

Choose a standalone AI phone service if you already have a website that's bringing in calls, and your only problem is that you're missing those calls when you're busy working. £99-ish a month solves that one specific problem, cleanly.

Choose Inboundry Always On if you need the website, the marketing, the SEO, and the AI phone answering. Always On is everything in Growth, plus an AI receptionist that answers every call, and £149 a month covers all of it in one package.

Choose Inboundry Growth if you don't actually need an AI receptionist yet but you do need a website and marketing. Growth is everything in Launchpad, plus monthly marketing to bring in more work. Don't pay for a phone service you don't need. Growth also includes a missed-call text-back service, so if someone tries to call you and gets your voicemail, they automatically get a text back within seconds.

If you're not sure, keep reading. We've tried to be fair about who each option actually suits.

Who AI phone answering services are built for

The AI phone answering space for UK trades is genuinely well-served right now. The leading services are founder-led, UK-based, and properly built for the trade audience. They all do broadly the same thing:

  • An AI receptionist answers calls 24/7 when you're not available
  • It captures the caller's name, number, postcode, what they need, and how urgent it is
  • It detects emergency situations (no heat, leak, no power) and flags them differently
  • It sends you the job details by SMS, email, or WhatsApp so you can call back on your terms
  • It can book appointments straight into your calendar on the higher tiers

If your problem is genuinely just "I miss too many calls when I'm busy working," this is a well-built solution to that specific problem.

What standalone AI phone services do well

  • They do one thing well. Phone answering is their entire product. They're not trying to also be a website agency or a CRM. That focus shows.
  • They set up fast. Most can have you live in 3 to 7 days, with white-glove onboarding handled by their team.
  • No website required. The phone service forwards your existing number. You don't need anything else in place.
  • Trade-specific by design. The leading UK services are built specifically for plumbers, heating engineers, electricians, and similar trades. They understand "no heat" is different from "boiler service due."
  • Predictable pricing. £50 to £200 a month, flat rate on most plans, often no contract.
  • Genuinely useful guarantees. Some offer money-back if they don't book you a certain number of jobs in your first 60 days.
  • Founder-led with good support. Most are small, founder-led businesses with responsive customer service. You're not getting passed around a call centre.

What standalone AI phone services might not be right for

Every product has trade-offs, and these are the ones worth knowing about before you sign up.

  • They don't bring you new work. This is the big one. An AI receptionist captures calls you're already getting. If your phone isn't ringing in the first place, an AI receptionist solves nothing. You need marketing first, then a receptionist when you're actually busy.
  • They don't include a website. If you don't have one, you'll need to get one separately. That means managing two vendors, two bills, and making sure they work together.
  • They don't manage your SEO or Google Business Profile. Same problem. The calls coming in still depend on you being found in the first place, and that needs a separate solution.
  • Per-minute pricing on some plans. Some services advertise low headlines (£9.99 to £49/month) but charge per-minute fees on top. A busy plumber in winter could rack up £100+ of overages on a "£49/month" plan. Read the small print.
  • The AI is the AI. All of these services use broadly similar AI technology. The differences between them are setup quality, support, and trade-specific configuration, not raw capability.
  • You still need to call people back. The AI takes the message; you make the callback. Most of these services don't actually book or quote work themselves, they just capture the enquiry.

Who Inboundry is built for

Inboundry is a done-for-you website service for UK tradespeople running small businesses. Where standalone AI phone services focus on one thing, picking up the phone, we cover the whole picture. We build you a proper website on your own domain, in your own brand. We run the marketing that brings the work to your phone in the first place. And on our Always On tier, we include an AI receptionist as part of that bigger package, so the calls we generate also get answered when you can't take them.

Here's the part that surprises most people: we don't charge you up front. We build the site for your business first, before we ever speak to you. You get to have a proper look at it, decide whether you like it, and only then do you commit and pay. No deposit, no contract, no sitting through a sales pitch before you've seen anything. And if there are bits you'd like changed once you've seen it, we make those changes. The site needs to be right for you, not just built and handed over.

What Inboundry does well

  • We get the phone to ring in the first place. We work through 169 specific things to get a tradesperson's business properly set up online, from the website itself to the SEO, the blog content, the Google Business Profile management, the local search optimisation, the citations, the technical setup. All of this is the layer that turns Google searches into calls. AI phone services don't do any of this; they capture the calls you're already getting.
  • AI receptionist included on Always On. Same kind of capability standalone services charge £99 a month for, included in our £149/month tier alongside the website, SEO, blog content, reviews automation, and competitor monitoring.
  • It's all yours, even though we look after it. We host your site and look after your domain on your behalf so you don't have to think about any of the technical stuff. The moment you ever want to leave us, for any reason, we transfer the domain to you, hand over the content, and we'll make moving wherever you'd like to go as easy as possible. No strings attached, no exit fees, no awkward goodbyes.
  • Built for UK trades. Every site is designed for UK tradespeople. The pages, the language, the service descriptions, and the compliance details (Gas Safe, NICEIC, OFTEC, PLI) are all written for the work you actually do.
  • One bill, one team. You don't manage three vendor relationships to get a website, marketing, and phone answering. It's all us.
  • What you see is what you pay. £149 is £149. No per-minute overages, no add-on bundles that double the bill mid-month.

Where Inboundry might not be the right fit

This section matters. If any of these describe you, Inboundry might not be your best move, and I'd rather you know that now.

  • If your only problem is missing calls and your existing setup works, you don't need us. Pay £99 a month for a standalone AI receptionist and you're sorted. Spending £149/month on Always On to get marketing services you don't need would be daft.
  • If you've already invested in a website you like and it's bringing in work, the same applies. Add an AI receptionist alongside what you've got, don't replace what's working.
  • If you've genuinely got more work than you can handle and you just need help managing the inbound calls, a standalone phone service is the cleaner answer. Our value is in driving the call volume, not in fielding it for someone already at capacity.

Year 1 cost compared

The honest comparison depends on whether you already have a website or not. Here's what 12 months looks like under three different scenarios.

The numbers tell a specific story. A standalone AI phone service alone is cheaper than Always On, but it's solving a different problem. The fairer comparison is what it costs to get a website AND an AI receptionist if you buy them separately, versus our bundle.

Year 1 cost breakdown for every scenario (click to expand)
Scenario Year 1 cost
AI phone service only (£99/month, no website) £1,188
AI phone service + a typical UK web agency build (£2,000 build + £99/month phone) £3,188
AI phone service + Inboundry Launchpad (our website only, £297, plus £99/month phone) £1,485
Inboundry Launchpad + Growth marketing only (no phone service) £1,245
Inboundry Always On (website + SEO + reviews + AI receptionist + reports) £2,085

Real-world scenarios

These are the three patterns I see most often when I talk to tradespeople.

Scenario 1: Mike, a Gas Safe engineer working solo, busy with word-of-mouth work, no website at all. Misses three or four calls a day.

Tricky one. Mike's problem is currently missed calls, not lead generation. A standalone AI receptionist at £99/month would solve his immediate problem cleanly. But within 6 to 12 months, his word-of-mouth pipeline could plateau, and then he'd need a website and marketing on top. The honest call: if Mike has zero appetite for marketing right now and just wants the missed-calls problem sorted, he should go standalone. If he's planning to grow the business over the next two years, our Always On tier costs £50/month more and sets him up for both jobs.

Scenario 2: Sam, recently qualified electrician, just getting started, gets a couple of calls a week.

Standalone AI receptionist would be over-engineering. Sam's problem isn't missing calls, he's not getting enough of them. He needs a website and marketing, not a phone service. Inboundry Launchpad at £297 or Growth at £1,245/year is the right shape. He can add an AI receptionist later when he's actually busy.

Scenario 3: Dave, builder running a small crew, already has a basic website, definitely missing calls when he's on a job site.

Standalone is probably the right call for Dave. He's already got the website piece sorted, even if it's basic. Spending £149/month with us means buying marketing services he might not need yet. £99/month with a standalone AI service solves his specific problem and leaves him free to upgrade his website later when he has the time and money to think about it properly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need an AI receptionist if I just answer calls myself?

Honest answer: probably not, until you're properly busy. Most sole traders don't miss enough calls to justify £99/month for a phone service. The maths usually starts working when you're missing 5+ calls a week and each call is worth £150+ in potential work. Below that, an AI receptionist is solving a problem you don't really have.

What's the difference between the AI receptionist on your Always On tier and the standalone services?

The technology is broadly similar. All of us are using comparable AI underneath. The differences are: (1) ours is bundled with the website and marketing services so it's coordinated, (2) standalone services have spent more time optimising the call-handling experience as a single product, (3) some standalone services have very mature features around things like emergency triage. For 90% of trade use cases, the difference in raw capability is small. The bigger question is whether you want it bundled or standalone.

Can I use one of these services alongside Inboundry Growth instead of upgrading to Always On?

Yes, and that's a sensible setup if you want the flexibility. Growth at £1,245/year + a standalone AI service at £1,188/year = £2,433. That's £348 more than Always On, but it gives you the option to swap out one piece without disrupting the other if you change your mind on either. Some people prefer that. Most just go Always On for the simpler single-vendor setup.

The standalone services advertise prices as low as £9.99/month. Are those real?

They're real headline prices, but they're usually not what you'd actually pay. Cheap plans almost always have per-minute overages, fewer included minutes, and limited features. A busy plumber on a "£9.99/month" plan can easily hit £100+ in overage charges in a busy month. The honest price for a useful AI phone service is £49 to £150/month flat-rate.

What happens if I cancel?

Standalone services typically end on 30 days' notice (most have no contracts). Calls revert to your normal voicemail. Inboundry Always On ends on 30 days' notice too, and you can either downgrade to Growth, stay on the £15/month Renewal plan, or take everything elsewhere. Either way, leaving is easy.

How long does Inboundry take to set up compared to a standalone AI service?

We get a website live within seven days, and the AI receptionist is configured during the same week. Standalone AI services typically set up in 3 to 7 days from sign-up. Both are quick. The Always On setup takes a few days longer because we're configuring more pieces (website, GBP, SEO setup, AI receptionist, etc.) but it's all running within the same 7 to 10 day window. We like to think we're better for year one than they are by year two, because we're also working on the marketing layer that grows your business while you're working.

Our honest take

Standalone AI phone answering services are a good product solving a real problem. If you've got a stable business with a website that already works and your only issue is that calls go to voicemail when you're under a sink, paying £99 a month to fix that is perfectly sensible. We're not trying to convince you otherwise.

What we'd push back on is treating an AI receptionist as a replacement for marketing. They're not the same thing. A receptionist captures calls you're already getting. Marketing makes the calls happen in the first place. If your phone isn't ringing much yet, an AI receptionist is solving the wrong problem.

The reason we built Inboundry Always On the way we did is that, for trades doing real volume, you genuinely need both layers. We bundle them because buying them separately is more expensive and means managing two vendors. But if you only need one of the two layers right now, the standalone option is cleaner and cheaper than buying both from us.

If that fits where you are, we'd love to show you the demo we've already built for your business. If a standalone AI service is genuinely the right answer for you right now, we mean it: go with one of them. Better to know now than to waste anyone's time.

The whole article in 60 seconds

If you only read this far, here's the gist:

  • AI phone answering services solve one specific problem: you miss calls when you're busy working, the AI takes the message.
  • They don't fix a quiet phone. If your phone isn't ringing in the first place, an AI receptionist doesn't help. That needs marketing.
  • Standalone services charge £50 to £200/month for phone answering only. Some cheap plans have per-minute overages that can balloon the real cost.
  • Inboundry Always On includes an AI receptionist for £149/month, plus website, ongoing SEO, two blog posts a month, GBP management, automated reviews, competitor monitoring, and a quarterly strategy call.
  • Year 1 totals: standalone phone service alone £1,188. Inboundry Always On £2,085. Buying both separately £2,500+.
  • Pick a standalone service if your only problem is missed calls and you've already got marketing sorted.
  • Pick Inboundry Always On if you need the website and the marketing alongside the phone answering.
  • Pick Inboundry Growth if you don't need the AI receptionist yet, just the website and marketing. Don't pay for what you don't need.
